‘Dear Mr. Raab,

I attach a letter which I have been asked to forward to you by members of Walton and Hersham Labour Party.

In spite of our political differences I hope that on this occasion we have a subject on which we can agree. Vulnerable children should always be above Party politics and those fleeing from evil regimes deserve to be treated with care and dignity.

I look forward to receiving your response.

Letter to Dominic Raab MP:

Dominic Raab MP

26th October 2016

Dear Mr. Raab,

According to Home Secretary Amber Rudd, in the past few days almost 200 children have been brought to Britain from the refugee camp in Calais and within the Syrian resettlement programme under the Dubs Amendment, but many more still urgently need safe resettlement.

Shamefully, one in four councils are refusing to accept moral responsibility for helping these vulnerable children.  Unbelievably within Theresa May’s own constituency, the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, the local council say they are already doing their bit by taking in refugees under the Syrian resettlement programme so can’t afford to do more.

Elmbridge, being one of the wealthiest councils in one of the most affluent areas of Britain, could and should be offering assistance, and we urge you to do all you possibly can to ensure that as many as possible of these frightened children from the Calais refugee camp can find a safe haven within our Borough and your constituency.

We suspect that you have particular empathy with these wretched children as your family has personal experience of fleeing a tyranny in search of a better life, indeed in search of life itself.

Yours sincerely

Richard Leonard
Secretary, Walton and Hersham Labour Party’
